Preserving our environment

With $407 million in dedicated funding, the Victorian Government is continuing to invest in the health of our environment.

This Budget includes:

Mitigating the risks of bushfires

$43.3 million to help mitigate the risks and impacts of bushfires throughout Victoria.

Strengthening the recycling sector

$34.9 million for immediate measures to strengthen the Victorian recycling sector. 

Protecting the environment from pollution and waste

$15 million for the Environment Protection Authority to better protect Victoria’s environment from pollution and waste.

Maintaining park ranger positions

$6.9 million to conserve Victoria's parks by maintaining park ranger positions, ensuring Victorians can continue to enjoy our state’s parks.

Victoria’s Coastcare program

$4.5 million to continue Victoria’s Coastcare program and create a new statutory authority to protect the Great Ocean Road, its environment and communities.

Managing the spread of weeds and pests

$2.7 million in grants to rural and regional councils to manage the spread of weeds and pests and protect Victoria’s agricultural industry.

Climate change strategy

$2 million to develop Victoria’s first climate change strategy under the world-leading Climate Change Act (2017) to guide Victoria in tackling emissions reduction, addressing climate change and creating jobs in a low-carbon future.

Protecting our waterways

In addition, the Government is providing $23.7 million to protect our waterways, improve water management and assist drought-affected communities, including:

  • $6 million to support integrated water management projects that allow smarter use of water in our cities and towns
  • $5.1 million to extend protections for our waterways in Melbourne’s west and continue to improve management of the Yarra River
